Bronchoscopy is an endoscopic procedure that allows doctors to see inside the lungs and airways. A pulmonologist, a doctor who specialises in respiratory ailments, performs this advanced diagnostic technique on the patient. The primary goal of bronchoscopy is to view the interior pathways of the lungs and detect any early warning signs of disease in order to ensure timely treatment of the pulmonary disorder and improve respiratory wellness. Bronchoscopy makes use of a bronchoscope, which allows for clear visualisation of the internal assemblies of the lungs, the larynx or voice box, the trachea (windpipe), and the tubular pathways of the lungs, known as the bronchi and bronchioles. A bronchoscope is typically made up of a pliable fibre optic substance that contains a light source and a camera lens that captures images of the lungs internally and is connected to a colour video screen on the outside to allow viewing of the lung components. In some cases, a biopsy of lung tissue is collected alongside a bronchoscopy to determine the presence of foreign particles or microbial infectious/pathogenic agents.
