Interstitial lung disease (ILD) refers to a group of more than 200 conditions that cause inflammation and scarring in the lungs. ILD harms the tissues that connect the small air sacs in your lungs (alveoli) to the blood vessels that surround them. This makes it more difficult for you to move oxygen from your lungs into your body. Diffuse parenchymal lung disease is another name for interstitial lung disease (DPLD). Parts of your lungs that help oxygen get into your blood and out to your tissues are damaged when you have interstitial lung disease. Scarring in your lungs makes breathing difficult, and you may have a chronic cough. A lack of oxygen can cause the constant fatigue. When the damage worsens, life-threatening complications such as lung infections and respiratory failure can occur (not enough oxygen or too much carbon dioxide in your body). Shortness of breath (dyspnea) that worsens with exercise or exertion, dry cough, fatigue, and chest discomfort are all common symptoms of interstitial lung disease. Symptoms are usually mild at first but worsen over the course of months or years. Depending on the underlying cause of ILD, you may experience additional symptoms.
