Endobronchial ultrasound bronchoscopy (EBUS) is a procedure used to diagnose various types of lung problems, such as infections or cancer. EBUS bronchoscopy is performed by a pulmonologist, a trained lung doctor. A flexible tube is inserted into your mouth, then into your windpipe and lungs. A small video camera at the end of the tube takes pictures of your lungs and surrounding areas. The images can assist in locating and evaluating areas of your lung that have previously been seen on X-rays or scans and require further examination. EBUS is typically performed as an outpatient procedure, which means you will return home the same day. Aside from avoiding surgical cuts, the bronchoscope allows your doctor to access more areas of the lungs, including difficult-to-reach areas like smaller lymph nodes. The doctor will administer a sedative to you prior to the test. This allows you to unwind and become drowsy. They also numb the back of your throat with a local anesthetic spray. The procedure is similar to a bronchoscopy biopsy, but an ultrasound scan is used to show the area.
