Sarcoidosis is an inflammatory disease that can affect one or more organs, but the lungs and lymph glands are the most commonly affected. As a result of the inflammation, abnormal lumps or nodules (referred to as granulomas) form in one or more organs. These granulomas can alter the normal structure and function of the affected organ. Aside from the lungs and lymph glands, the skin, eyes, musculoskeletal system, nervous system, heart, liver, and kidneys are the body organs or systems affected by sarcoidosis that are associated with the most noticeable symptoms. Patients may experience symptoms related to the specific organ affected, general symptoms, or no symptoms at all. Individual symptoms can also differ depending on how long the illness has been going on, where the granulomas are forming, how much tissue has been affected, and whether the granuloma formation is still active or has turned into a scar. Lofgren's syndrome, a type of sarcoidosis that affects the lymph nodes and is accompanied by a skin condition that produces red nodules under the skin, as well as fever and arthritis pain, affects some patients who experience a sudden onset of the disease. Patients with Lofgren's syndrome can usually expect a positive outcome; the disease resolves on its own in 85% to 90% of cases.
