Bronchoscopy is an endoscopic procedure that allows doctors to view the lungs and airways from the inside. This advanced diagnostic technique is performed on the patient by a pulmonologist, a doctor who specialises in respiratory ailments. Bronchoscopy's primary goal is to visualise the interior pathways of the lungs and detect any early warning signs of disease in order to ensure timely treatment of the pulmonary disorder and improve respiratory wellness. This protocol is primarily used to diagnose lung infections, pulmonary tumours, lung cancer, blockages in breathing passages, excess mucus buildup, and chronic cough in patients. Bronchoscopy employs a bronchoscope to provide clear visualisation of the internal assemblies of the lungs, the larynx or voice box, the trachea (windpipe), and the tubular pathways of the lungs known as the bronchi and bronchioles. A bronchoscope is typically composed of a pliable fibre optic substance with a light source and a camera lens that captures images of the lungs internally and is connected to a colour video screen on the outside to allow viewing of the lung components. A biopsy of lung tissue is sometimes collected in conjunction with bronchoscopy to determine the presence of foreign particles or microbial infectious/pathogenic agents.
