The tissue lining your sinuses becomes inflamed or swollen when you have sinusitis. Your face has structures called sinuses that are usually air-filled. They can get irritated by bacterial infections, viral infections, and allergies, which can lead to them becoming blocked and fluid-filled. Your face may feel tight and painful, you may have a stuffy nose, and other symptoms as a result. Four paired cavities (spaces) in your head are known as your sinuses. They are connected by little tunnels. Mucus produced by the sinuses leaks out of the nasal passages. This drainage aids in maintaining a healthy nose free of bacteria, allergies, and other pathogens. Most occurrences of sinusitis are brought on by viruses, much like those that cause the common cold. Bacteria may infect you after contracting a viral sinus infection or they may cause sinusitis themselves. You may have bacterial sinusitis if your runny nose, stuffy nose, and facial pain persist for longer than 10 days. Your symptoms could appear to get better, but they later come back worse than before. For bacterial sinusitis, decongestants and antibiotics typically work well.
